How to Create & Host Your First .onion Website | Full Tor Tutorial

Dr. Ibrar Ahmed3 min read

Build a three-page website on Ubuntu 24. 04 and publish it as your own Tor onion service. You create the files, serve them on 127. 0. 0. 1 port 8080, point onion port 80 at that listener, restart Tor, and read the hostname Tor writes. Host only pages you have the right to publish. An onion address identifies the service key.

It does not identify you, and it does not make a page trustworthy. Anyone who knows the address can open it unless client authorization is configured separately. This lesson uses the Ubuntu tor and nginx packages and a local static site. The hostname on screen came from a lab where systemd was process 1. That container was stopped after the capture, so this video does not claim the service is still online.

Tor Browser was not recorded. Reboot survival was not tested. What you will do Copy the site files onto a machine you control. Start a loopback HTTP server on 127. 0. 0. 1 port 8080. Add one HiddenServicePort in torrc. Read the hostname file. Do not read the private key. Move the same files onto Nginx, still bound to loopback.
